Sustainable Building Products

While we think of the traditional uses of hemp fibre as ropes, canvas, cloth and paper, it was also used widely as a reinforcing material in mud brick, adobe and renders, as well as mixed with lime to make a very strong and long lasting concrete like composite.

Hemp fibre in building materials is on the comeback trail.

Hemp and Lime Blocks

Block comparison

Benefits of hemp blocks over conventional concrete blocks:

  • Hemp blocks are lighter, therefore cheaper to transport    -less emissions
  • Better insulation, less heating and cooling costs               – less emissions
  • Carbon sequestering    (> 1 kg CO2 per block)                  - less emissions
  • Less embodied emissions.

Downside to hemp blocks:

  • Much lower compression strength   - not load bearing
