Sustainable Building Products
While we think of the traditional uses of hemp fibre as ropes, canvas, cloth and paper, it was also used widely as a reinforcing material in mud brick, adobe and renders, as well as mixed with lime to make a very strong and long lasting concrete like composite.
Hemp fibre in building materials is on the comeback trail.
Hemp and Lime Blocks

Benefits of hemp blocks over conventional concrete blocks:
- Hemp blocks are lighter, therefore cheaper to transport -less emissions
- Better insulation, less heating and cooling costs – less emissions
- Carbon sequestering (> 1 kg CO2 per block) - less emissions
- Less embodied emissions.
Downside to hemp blocks:
- Much lower compression strength - not load bearing
