Industrial Hemp

History

Hemp cultivation predates written history and can be documented back over 2000 years.

Hemp was one of the world’s largest agricultural crops and the most traded commodity until the 1890s.

While industrial hemp and marijuana are identical species (Cannabis sativa), Industrial Hemp is a very low THC strain developed to be a high fibre producing plant, whereas marijuana has been bred to be high in THC content.

Products from Industrial hemp (seed, oil and fibre) do not contain any drug substances.

Today there are hundreds of diverse applications for industrial hemp, stemming from:

  • Nutritious food supplements
  • Sophisticated building composites
  • Cosmetics
  • Textiles
  • Plastics
  • Animal feedstock and products
  • Energy applications

Following a resurgence of interest in the crop due to its green appeal, Agri Fibre Industries aims to pioneer an industry that will meet the demands of a rapidly increasing market.

AFI are active members of the state’s peak national hemp body, Industrial Hemp Association of Queensland (IHAQ).
